Ronald Knight, MD
Dr. Ronald Knight is a cardiac and pulmonary surgeon who has been in active practice in Tacoma since 1979. He received his general and vascular surgery training at St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. His cardiac and thoracic surgery training was completed at the University of Oregon Health Sciences University in 1979. Dr. Knight’s pulmonary surgery experience was expanded by an exhange program at the Brompton Chest Hospital in London, England. Dr. Knight is an experienced cardiac and pulmonary surgeon, having performed more than 4500 cardiac procedures. His primary focus has always been to provide the highest quality practice of clinical surgery resulting in the best possible results. This entails efficient intraoperative use of the latest proven surgical techniques and technology. In addition, he believes it is essential to explain in simple terms all aspects involved in the planned surgery course to the patient and the family. He very much enjoys the teaching portion of clinical practice. Dr. Knight performs many complex valve procedures, “off-pump” coronary artery surgery, “transfusion free” surgery, atrial fibrillation surgery and laser revascularization. He also performs the full range of lung and chest surgery, including minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Knight is a clinical instructor in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a Diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Knight has served on the Board of Trustees of the Pierce County Medical Society, on the Long-Range Planning Committee and as Chairman of the Critical Care Committee of St. Joseph Medical Center. He is currently the Medical Director for Cardiac Surgery (Perioperative Services) at St. Joseph Medical Center and is intimately involved in organizational changes to improve cardiac services. Dr. Knight and his wife of 35 years have three daughters. He has an active interest in aviation, having rebuilt and flown an antique airplane, and was a Flight Surgeon in the U.S. Air Force. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters while a member of F-4 Squadron in Southeast Asia. Since being in the Puget Sound area, he has been a successful racing sailboat skipper. Dr. Knight enjoys travel, experiencing and understanding other cultures. He is a prolific reader and hopes to return to flying when he has more free time.
